The only time the needle moves is when set to the "light meter" position. I tried it in dry soil, moist soil, mud, slurry and water. It never registered pH nor moisture. Parts of our lawn, near the woods with pine trees were becoming less grassy and more mossy and some broad leaf had me concerned that I wasn't liming sufficiently to neutralize... Great product, really helps me to know what the PH level of my soil is so I can make adjustments for each plant. New to worm farming and soil is critical to worms as well as proper feeding. Moisture and Ph levels if not monitored can cause worms to try and relocate or reduce life span. The only thing that works is the moisture tester. Don't waste your money.
